DOTS Traffic City

About DOTS Traffic City – Unity Editor Tool & Plugin

Unity City Traffic and Pedestrian Simulation System

DOTS Traffic City is a large-scale urban simulation framework designed to generate, manage, and coordinate thousands of concurrent vehicles and pedestrians. Leveraging the data-oriented technology stack and Burst-compiled jobs, the toolkit provides urban road networks, rule-based intersection priority, dynamic pedestrian navigation, and multi-tier physics execution for open-world environments.

Vehicle Simulation and Road Logic

The traffic pipeline handles complex vehicular behaviors across customizable road lanes and junctions without requiring persistent raycasting. Traffic behaviors include automatic speed control based on posted lane limits, priority-based crossroads navigation, lane changing to avoid congestion, and dynamic yielding for emergency vehicles such as police cars and ambulances. Vehicles support considerate, passive, and aggressive driving styles, while antistuck logic culls or recycles stalled units outside player visibility.

Physics execution scales dynamically through selectable simulation types, including simple physics, custom DOTS physics, hybrid MonoBehaviour physics, or a non-physics mode where motion calculations run purely in jobs. For multi-part vehicles, trailer setups are supported across both DOTS Entities and Hybrid Mono workflows, while two-wheeled motorcycles and three-wheelers operate in Hybrid Mono mode.

Pedestrian Systems and Animation Modes

Urban crowds are sustained through multiple pedestrian presentation pipelines designed to balance rendering overhead and animation fidelity:

Pedestrian navigation includes built-in A* pathfinding, Unity NavMesh integration, and predictive crowd avoidance steering to navigate sidewalks, intersections, and station waiting areas.

Editor Tools, Runtime APIs, and Streaming

Urban environments can be assembled in the editor or generated procedurally at runtime. The package provides one-click crossroad generation, automated traffic light linking, and dedicated parking layout builders. For dynamic titles, the Runtime Road API allows developers to construct road segments from tile grids or Unity splines. Large worlds benefit from infinite chunk streaming for 3D assets and road entities, alongside a built-in Floating Origin system that preserves coordinate precision across massive maps.
